This book was okay. It's about a woman who travels from England to the Salt Lake Valley. The conversations are a little cheesy and the main character is a little too perfect. I listened to it on tape. Maybe I would have liked it better if I read it myself. Mar 31, Maggie added it Shelves: Take a triumphant trip through history. A masterfully crafted story, rich in detail, epic in scope, and warm in character, that illuminates how one can best achieve true happiness by listening to the Spirit.

Oct 06, Holly rated it liked it. It is an easy read, I enjoyed the story. About a vicars daughter who marry a Lord that is abusive, meets the missionaries and joins the church, and comes to America to be with the sanits. Not the best writing but good plot and holds your attention. Oct 05, Brynna rated it liked it. It was light enough, but very predictable.

I love a good LDS novel. Easy read with little intensity that's all wrapped up nice in the end. Sometimes it's nice to not have to think about a book too much.

Talk about happily ever after! Tiffanie rated it liked it Oct 04, Heather rated it it was ok Mar 30, Connie rated it liked it Jan 10, Tera Duncan rated it liked it Oct 13, Bobbilyn rated it it was ok Jul 14, By page four, the protagonist's wife has gone into labor, and by page five, the reader has been introduced to 10 characters. Ken Sanderson's wife, Karen, dies early in the novel, and from there the story slows down considerably, giving the reader a much-needed break from the onslaught of introductions, and allowing to get to know the main characters more intimately. Several obstacles stand in the way: While the nature of Karen's promise seems jarring — initially causing the reader some uneasiness regarding how quickly Ken will rebound — Roulstone writes an adequate grieving period for Ken, allowing the reader to want for his happiness rather than criticize his decision to move on.

Roulstone's deliberate writing makes it clear Ken loved Karen deeply, and their relationship is never trivialized.

There are a few references to the LDS Church in the first few chapters, but it becomes much more central to the plot when about halfway through the book Ken bears his testimony to a curious acquaintance named Ben and closes it in the name of Jesus Christ. It quickly becomes more natural and expected, though, as Ken and Nell hold a religious conversation and he quotes Joseph Smith and King David.

In a gesture sure to make any missionary-minded member proud, Ken gives Nell a Book of Mormon at the end of their talk. All rights reserved worldwide.
